Should I wear a floor-length evening gown or a cocktail outfit (skit and top or short dress? It's a formal wedding. The reception starts at 6 pm. My evening gown is couture and glamorous and my cocktail outfit is simple and cute. I don't want to out-dress the bride or be under-dressed, either.

If it's a formal evening wedding, then a floor-length evening gown would be perfectly appropriate. Don't worry about out-dressing the bride, unless you're planning to wear white sequins!

The event could go either way. The floor-length gown could be appropriate for a late-afternoon/evening event. But so could the knee-length cocktail outfit. I think you will have to ask the bride (or maid/matron of honor) for advice. But it's always appropriate to ask whoever sent you the invitation.
