When picking a photographer it is critical that you actually meat them, hopefully more than once! It is important to remember that photographers do more than simply shoot pictures (more on that aspect is a moment) but they will also be interacting with the guests at your wedding. A good photographer should have a good personality and be able to work with people. On several occasions I have had to pick up the slack left by the wedding planner in order to insure that the day was actually enjoyable for the couple. All of this may be hard to guage in an individual meeting, so word-of-mouth is usually the best way to find one.A photographer should be flexible to what the bride wants. Sometimes brides are more interested in photographers that can capture the moment than they are those who are invisible during the ceremony. An excellent photographer can almost do buth, but they are rare, and usually pricey!Look for photographers that have a unique perspective in their work. Artistic shots that are out of the norm are often my clients favorite pictures. While very few photographers do this, I shoot exclusively digital and give the bride ALL of my shots royalty-free for one flat rate of $1,000-$2,000. Not only are all of the shots included, they are also all in color and in B&W, hand-corrected for proper exposure and such. The printing itself can be handled at any photo-processing place at a very reasonable price. Finally, the most important aspect of a photographer is that you must be comfortable around them. A good photographer will set the couple at ease when taking pictures, letting them have a few moments to catch their breath and be away from the crowd. The resulting pictures are amazing. One final hint: Have as many posed photos done BEFORE the wedding as possible! While untraditional this allows the photographer to work at a comfortable pace, take more (and therefore better) pictures, and prevent the long wait for the guests.
