i dont think its rude as long as you ask in a nice way. i got an invitation once that said: we dont request for you to bring a gift but if you wish to bring something we would apreciate if its was a monetary gift, something like that but it didnt sound bad to me, is like instead of asking something from a store your are asking for cash i think is the same
