Default Wedding Photographers?

Ok, so does anyone know how much a photographer will typically charge negatives? I just had my engagment photos taken and i want all the pics from that day (over 300 pics!) and the photographer said i have to pay extra for that. Has anyone else have to pay this?

It depends on the package you buy. Many offer all of the negatives as part of the package but some don't and then charge you for every picture you buy. Sounds like you have the latter. You should try to get a bulk price for all of the negatives from your wedding on CD, including the bridal portraits, engagement shots, and all wedding pics. That way, if he's going to charge you extra, you pay one price up front. If he won't do it and insists on doing them all individually, you will just have to shell out, you should have bought a package that included them. Sorry.

Usually they won't give you the negatives at all. If they do it's something like $500 because that loses revenue for them as you'll get pictures produced on your own.

My photographer is giving us a disk of all the high-res photos from the wedding for us to keep (and make our own copies of).

If your photographer doesn't charge much for the actual time to shoot the pictures, he probably relies on making his money through charging for the negatives. (If he didn't shoot with film, he doesn't have negatives, only an archive of the digital images.) I wouldn't mind paying extra for the engagement pics, I just wouldn't buy all 300. However, I definately wouldn't want to pay extra for each wedding day picture. You need to talk to him about this now *before* the wedding & try to come to a compromise that is fair to both parties.

That's typical if you don't have it in the contract before they're taken. I normally see $200-300 for negatives (digital files) for a wedding, but I can't imagine engagement photos should be that much. If he wants to charge you more than $100 extra for the negatives, I'd have a fit, if I were you.

I didn't have to pay for negatives. When I signed my contract, he included the negatives with my price so they are all owned by me.

You should've negotiated to have your negatives up front because they can charge you a lot of money to buy them.
