Easy 10 points...How best to plan an outdoor Autumn ('09) wedding...?
...in West Virginia? I need to know details of all sorts. We're thinking October, but we don't want it to be chilly, but nor do we want lack of color. What are some considerations to be taken for outdoor weddings?
I understand the basics already...I'm just wondering how you can possibly set a date when you have no idea what the weather will be, and where to start planning, and the different aspects to consider, what people who had outdoor weddings would do differently, etc. We're having an Old English feel, so my fiance' won't be wearing a tux, but a poet shirt (lace up collar, NOT frills), and I'll be wearing a simple chiffon gown in white with an empire waist. The straps of the dress definitely would make a warmer day nice, haha.
My fiance' and I live forty-five minutes from Beckley.

I agree with the first answer...RAIN! We got married in October in Pennsylvania and it was 40 degrees and raining. The fall folliage was gorgeous though! It was the perfect time for the turning of the seasons.

Rain!! My friend just had a beautiful October ceremony in Amish Country in Ohio, and she was panicked because rain was predicted. It didn't rain, but it was chilly. The colors were amazing, though.

Farmers Almanac is something you want to check. The colors turned really really late this year but better too early than after the leaves have already fallen and it starts to get grey.
You want to look for historic sites, farms, and places that have a barn or alternate indoor venue. Tent on standby works too but generators and bathrooms become a consideration when creating a venue from scratch.
Set up is another consideration. You may want to get a DOC or someone who has an eye for the big picture. Keeping you on time is important too.
Give your photograper the time they need to get their job done well for you and still let you enjoy your day.
Your, make up artist, officiant and ceremony musicians. They are all rented for a time slot and schedule more than one wedding in a day. Be on time so they don't have to leave without doing whay you have paid them to do.
(believe it or not I had a bride who was an hour and a half late. I had to announce "Ladies and gentlemen the time myself and the chapel have been rented for has now come and gone, but with any luck everything is all right and I'll see you later at the reception!" I went to my next wedding then back to where their reception was.)
If you have a 40k 5 hour event, starting a half hour late is 4 grand of party that you have paid for that your not getting no because the time was spent milling about waiting.

With an outdoor wedding you always should have a back up plan because of rain. I would say have it at the beginning of Oct. or end of Sept. you can have your beautiful colors and still have it warm. If you are a member of a church you can usually get the building for free, so you could book that as a back up plan. Or use your reception site. A friend had her wedding in Oct. and it was calling for rain so they decided to have it inside since they set up the day before and there back up was at the hotel where there reception was (it ended up being a warm day but she said it was still beautiful)

Location: You don't want to get married under a tree with a huge wasp nest in the branches.
Weather: Make sure you schedule on a day where it will be nice outside, and not rain.
Setup: Since you'll be outside, you can be more creative that you would be if you were in a church. Arrange the seats anyway that you want. Have fun little decorations. Go wild.
Outside weddings are always lovely. Good luck!

You can get the average weather for that time and place on weather.com, but still, you really CAN'T know for sure what the weather's going to be like... so plan for the worst! Make sure you have a tent or some other shelter, a nice wrap or jacket to go with your dress, etc.
