Default Has anyone taken old engagement/wedding rings in to be redone for a newer ring?

I have a very nice engagement/wedding and a anniversary ring and am now divorced. I want to take the rings in and have them redone so that they do not represent my old relationship. Has anyone out there done this and if so, is it expensive or hard to do? They all have diamonds in them.

A friend of mine wore a ring (just a ring, not an engagement/wedding ring) that was made from her mother's stone when her parents got divorced. It was placed in a different setting. It's not hard, and you should be able to get it done anywhere.

My engagement and wedding rings ended up at the bottom of the San Diego Bay when the divorce was finalized. It was a thoroughly liberating feeling!

Speak to your jeweler, hopefully a competent goldsmith. They'll be able to make recommendations for you. They also should be able to give you a current appraisals for the value of the stones. Don't overlook that detail as stones, especially diamonds are rising in value again and insuring your ring(s) is a smart investment as settings weaken over time and you may not be fortunate enough to find a loose stone!

Any jeweler can do it or have it sent off to be done. Make sure it is a credible designer of jewelry though.

I myself have not done this but my engagement ring is being made from my fiancee's mother's diamond from her wedding ring (she passed away when he was 12) and his step mother's 6 carat sapphire ring (a family heirloom passed down several generations).. It is taking a while as the sapphire is being cut and they are trying to fit everything together. I think that what you are doing sounds like a wonderful idea. Just make sure that you go to a quality jeweler.

Alot of people do this. Making a nice pendant is a great idea for a center stone with smaller diamonds around it.
